Heavy rain causes flooding, damage throughout region

‘Flash flood emergency’ issued for part of Washington Co.

Widespread, severe storms pounded southweste­rn Pennsylvan­ia on Friday night, causing flooding and damage in numerous areas.

The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh issued a “flash flood emergency” about 10:15 p.m. for the city of Washington and southern Washington County. Residents were advised to seek higher ground. Three inches of rain fell in some areas between late afternoon and 11 p.m. There were no immediate reports of injuries or widespread damage.

Virtually all of Allegheny County was hit by the storm. Flooding on numerous roadways was reported, with trees and wires down and cars floating in some intersecti­ons.

Pittsburgh police shut down Route 51 outbound between the Liberty Tunnels and Route 88 in Overbrook due to flooding. Becks Run Road at East Carson Street also was closed.

In Scott, flooding forced the closure of Washington Avenue between Boden Avenue and Patete Custom Kitchens. A vehicle was stranded in the 1100 block of Washington Avenue.
