Surgery option for injured QB Tannehill

-

Ryan Tannehill sat in the team cafeteria Friday, his left leg in a brace and propped on a chair as he watched practice from afar with a sullen stare.

He has again been demoted to the role of spectator, perhaps for the entire season.

Knee surgery is an option for the Miami Dolphins quarterback, although it’s possible an operation can be avoided, coach Adam Gase said. But even then Tannehill is expected to be out at least six weeks.

Tannehill, who missed the final four games of the 2016 season with two sprained ligaments in his knee, re-injured it Thursday in practice. An MRI was inconclusive, and the Dolphins are consulting with a multitude of specialists.

“I wouldn’t say second and third opinions — we’re probably going deeper than that, talking to a lot of people, making sure we get the right information,” Gase said. “Everything is on the table right now.”

There’s no timetable for a decision, he said.

Gase said he hasn’t decided whether to bring in another quarterback. Matt Moore went 2-2 as a starter replacing Tannehill a year ago and becomes the new No. 1 — for the moment. The other quarterbacks on the roster are David Fales and Brandon Doughty.

“Right now Matt is our quarterback,” Gase said. “We’ll see where we go from there. I’ve got to figure out what’s going on with Ryan, and then we’ll make decisions after that.”

The Dolphins could pursue Colin Kaepernick, who parted ways with the San Francisco 49ers in March and remains unsigned. Jay Cutler, who played for the Chicago Bears when Gase was their offensive coordinator, would be an option if he’s willing to give up his new job asa TV commentator.

Bills

Cordy Glenn’s sore left foot checked out fine and Buffalo’s starting left tackle reportedly is expected to resume practicing next week at Orchard Park, N.Y. Glenn missed consecutive days of practice. Without disclosing the nature of the injury, coach Sean McDermott referred to Glenn’s injury as “general foot soreness,” and said it was too early to determine whether surgery would be required. Also, starting defensive end Shaq Lawson did not finish practice because of what he called a minor groin strain.

Ravens

Baltimore addressed its thin offensive line by signing former Raiders tackle Austin Howard to a three-year contract. The loss of Rick Wagner to free agency and the recent retirement of John Urschel left Baltimore scrambling to fill out its line. They hope Howard, a six-year pro, can help fill the void. Howard was released last week by Oakland, where he spent the pastthree seasons.

Patriots

Quarterback Tom Brady said he prefers to keep any medical issues in his past private, including whether he had a concussion last season. He said he “isn’t blind” to issues such as CTE, but remains confident in how he tries to avoid injury. Brady’s wife, supermodel Gisele Bundchen, told “CBS This Morning” in May that Brady played through a concussion on his way to a fifth Super Bowl title.

Seahawks

Receiver Tyler Lockett returned to practice for the first time since December when two bones were broken in his lower right leg.
