because it brought us together.”

It’s a tight-knit group, and that camaraderie could be an asset as the coaching staff works out its depth chart in preseason camp. The team is tasked with replacing the outside defensive line duo of Garrett Sickels and Evan Schwan, who were the top pass rushers this past season.

Their departure for the NFL creates opportunity for the rest of the group. Junior Torrence Brown, who has four games of starting experience under his belt, could be a favorite to nab one of the end positions alongside senior tackles Curtis Cothran and Parker Cothren.

“I think Torrence Brown has played a lot of football for us and is kind of the old wiry vet and I think is going to be very, very productive for us,” Franklin said.

Severalplayers are in competition for the other starting position. Junior Colin Castagna, sophomores Miller and Ryan Buchholz, and redshirt freshmen Toney, Shane Simmons and Daniel Joseph are inthe mix.

Toney, despite being slightly undersized at 218, has made a major impression on the coaching staff. Freshman Yetur Gross-Matos will likely have a role as well, Franklin said.

“We’re just five days in, but there’s a lot of reps to be looked at, to be viewed, and to evaluate these guys,” defensive coordinator Brent Pry said. “We’re going to keep growing in the right direction. We’ve got great candidates to have good end play.”
