Frick director discusses photography
Director to share highlights from region
Visitors have come to know Robin Nicholson as an entertaining, knowledgeable speaker and as the instigator of some very creative exhibitions since he became executive director of The Frick Pittsburgh in 2014. There’s an opportunity to learn about his avocational passion, photography, from 2-2:30 p.m. Friday at The Frick Art Museum in Point Breeze.
He’ll speak as part of the series “Flashbulb Fridays,” wherein voices from the Pittsburgh photography world discuss images in the current exhibition, “Irving Penn: Beyond Beauty,” as well as their own work.
A native of Edinburgh, Scotland, Mr. Nicholson’s formal chops include wide recognition as a scholar of the art of the 18th-century Stuart royal courts in Paris and Rome and author of an academic study of the portraiture of Prince Charles Edward Stuart. He came to The Frick from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond, Va., where he was deputy director for art and education.
But the self-described landscape photographer frequently stops to take pictures when bicycling in his free time. (View a sample of his images at nicholsonphotography.org.) The talk is free with exhibition admission.
“Irving Penn” continues through Sept. 10 at 7227 Reynolds St., Point Breeze. Admission is $10; students and seniors $8; ages 16 and younger $6; free for ages 5 and
