School board appoints interim superintendent

- By Deana Carpenter

Chartiers Valley has named assistant superintendent Scott Seltzer as interim superintendent following the resignation of Brian White, who is leaving to become superintendent of Butler Area School District.

As interim superintendent, Mr. Seltzer will receive a stipend of $2,000 in addition to his annual salary of $138,648.

The Chartiers Valley board unanimously approved Mr. White’s resignation, effective Aug. 31, and Mr. Seltzer’s position as interim superintendent at its Aug. 8 meeting.

“I would like to thank Dr. White for his seven years of service. He served this district tirelessly and with a great amount of effort in all aspects,” board president Tony Mazzarini said.

On appointing Mr. Seltzer as interim superintendent, Mr. Mazzarini said, “It was an easy decision because Scott Seltzer has been here the past seven years along with Dr. White helping the district to move to where we are today.”

At the board’s meeting on Tuesday, high school cafeteria manager Susan Allen voiced concern over reduced hours for the kitchen staff.

Ms. Allen said she and her staff received letters in the mail stating their hours were being reduced and one cook position was being cut for the 2017-18 school year.

Mr. Mazzarini said that food service, which is contracted through Nutrition Inc., is a separate item in the district’s budget and has had a negative balance for a couple of years.

“That negative balance comes out of the education fund,” he said.

The recommendations to cut hours and one position were based on a “series of evaluations,” he said. “We, as a board, approved the recommendations to balance the budget,” he said.

“There’s really not much we can do,” Mr. Mazzarni said. He did say the board can take a look at the operation of the kitchen staff over time.
