Stone Mountain carving is impressive art

-

In the early 1980s we took a vacation trip to Stone Mountain, Ga. What an awesome sight it was as we got our first look at that tremendous granite dome jutting up from the flat land below. We parked in the campground and after dinner went for ice cream at the base of the Confederate Memorial. It was an amazing sight, both by size and sculpture detail. Every night during our stay, we went back to that location with our binoculars so we could look closely at all the detail of that sculpture

Currently the news reports a movement to remove this sculpture. I glanced at a piece ofgranite we had brought back as a souvenir of Stone Mountain and grimaced. I can understand the basic concept of wanting the removal of offensive flags and statues that remind African-Americans of the slavery era. However, in the case of Stone Mountain, I believe it would be sacrilegious to destroy this amazing piece of art. It was designed and started by Gutzon Borglum, the artist who designed and carved Mount Rushmore. The Stone Mountain sculpture is not only larger than Mount Rushmore but also has much more detail. It is, in fact, the largest bas-relief sculpture in theworld!

We cannot change history. Our country had a civil war. I would like to see this amazing work of art retained but changed in name. Eliminate the “Confederate Memorial” name and change it to a more generic name, perhaps something like “Civil War Sculpture.” BOB REITH Bethel Park
