Lifts workers and the economy

A higher wage

-

On Labor Day, it is important to remember what the struggles of working people have achieved for all of us. We celebrate the 40-hour workweek, and that we send our children to school — not into factories. And yet we know that many still struggle. Studies show that the generation entering the workforce today is earning 20 percent less than their parents’ generation did, even in a time of record profits for big business.

We live today in a political environment where, on so many issues, we are asked to define which side we stand on. As an elected official, I am privileged to have had the opportunity to take actions impacting our workforce.

As decision-makers, we must achieve with our deeds what we urge for others with our words.

This is why I have ensured that all of my office’s employees earn more than $15 per hour. And, in 2014, I was the first elected official in Pennsylvania to provide paid family leave to all of my employees, which includes not only new parents but also family caregivers.

I took these measures because these aren’t perks; they are essential to allowing workers and their families to succeed. High-quality benefits also contribute to employee morale and retention, which is essential in government.

As health care and fastfood workers fight for $15, and workers in many industries in all corners of the country seek to gain and protect their right to organize, we must remember what John F. Kennedy told us — “a rising tide lifts all boats.” With more than 40 percent of American workers earning less than $15 per hour, lifting up workers is both a moral imperative and a necessity for our economy. Workers with no money to spend cannot drive consumer demand and economic growth.

All of us — especially those in positions of leadership — must work to achieve dignity and security for workers. Let’s build on the speeches and the celebrations and ensure that we practice what we preach: equitable treatment for all workers.
