Yankees catcher takes seat

-

New York Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez reluctantly began serving a reduced three-game suspension Monday after appealing his punishment for participating in a brawl against Detroit. Sanchez originally was suspended by Major League Baseball for four games.

“In a way I feel good about it, and then on the other hand I don’t feel good about it, because I’m going to be unable to help my team in these important games,” he said through a translator.

Sanchez will miss New York’s three-game series against the Baltimore Orioles, who began the day 3½ games behind the Yankees in the American League wild-card race.

The suspension stems from the Aug. 24 game against the Tigers. Yankees reliever Tommy Kahnle threw behind Miguel Cabrera in the sixth inning, and Kahnle was ejected.

But before play resumed, Cabrera and New York catcher Austin Romine scuffled near home plate. Sanchez, the designated hitter, left the bench and punched Cabrera and Nick Castellanos.

Romine has appealed his two-game suspension.

More Yankees

Outfielder Aaron Judgewalked for the 100th time Monday against the Baltimore Orioles, becoming the first rookie to recordat least 100 walks in a season since Jim Gilliam did so in 1953. Judge was walked by pitcher Dylan Bundy in the top of the second inning and three other times, pushing his season total to 103. The most walks in a season by a rookie since records were kept (1910 in National League, 1913 in American) is 106 by Les Fleming in 1942, according to Elias Sports Bureau.

Mets

Third baseman David Wright’s hopes of returning to the team this season are over. Mets officials said Wright, 34, will have surgery on his right rotator cuff Tuesday in New York. Wright previously played in the majors in May 2016 and had surgery the next month for a herniated disk in his neck. He cut short his comeback in the minors last week after experiencingpain.

Nationals

Washington placed right-hander Erick Fedde on the 10-day disabled list, a move that allowed them to call up righthander A.J. Cole from Class AAA Syracuse. Cole was started for the National League East Division leaders Monday night in Miami.
