Collection to assist animals in areas hit by hurricanes

A drive to collect supplies for animals displaced or abandoned in areas affected by hurricanes is under way in Allegheny County.

The Allegheny County Police Department and Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s office are working with local shelters and agencies to collect supplies.

Local shelters are in need of specific items (no monetary donations will be accepted as part of this drive — those can go straight to the shelter of your choice):

Dogs

• any unopened variety of grain-free dog food with meat listed as first item in ingredient­s list

• treats

• toys

• sheets

• towels

• blankets

• beds

• Martingale collars

• E-collars (cones)

Cats

• any unopened variety of cat food

• toys

• treats

• fleece blankets

• beds

• cat litter (non-clumping clay)

Miscellane­ous items

• laundry detergent (Arm & Hammer detergent)

• Clorox bleach

• leashes Donations will be accepted from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, Sept. 22, at the following locations:
