Letang must rely on better judgment
situations has been a discussion point for Letang and the Penguins. Throughout the postseason, Letang was a regular in the press box. Sullivan is hoping that experience, along with numerous conversations with defensive coach Sergei Gonchar, will help.
“We’re trying to help him recognize those situations,” Sullivan said. “I hope that experience serves him well. I think it will. We’ve talked about it, and we’ll continue to talk about it. Obviously, we want to keep him on the ice as often as we can.”
Alternate captain
Sullivan said Penguins coaches and management will meet at some point to determine which player or players will replace Chris Kunitz as alternate captain. That meeting hasn’t happened yet, Sullivan said.
Shoot it, Daniel
Daniel Sprong finished with four shots and a goal in the 6-2 win Saturday against the New Jersey Devils prospects. He could have had more.
There’s almost a Phil Kessel-like thing going on with Sprong. His shot is tremendous, but Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton coach Clark Donatelli and others keep telling him that he’s not using it enough. “We want him shooting every chance he gets,” Donatelli said in no uncertain terms.
“I think [Friday] I gave up a lot of opportunities to shoot,” Sprong said. “The coaching staff wanted me to have more of a shoot-first mentality. I did [Saturday]. I stuck more to my game. I thought I played a lot better that way, creating more chances for myself and for the team. I just have to build off that.”
