Oklahoma City man killed by police was deaf

OKLAHOMACI­TY — Oklahoma City police officers who opened fire on a manwho was approachin­g them holding a metal pipe apparently didn’t hear witnesses yelling that the man was deaf, the department said Wednesday.

Police Capt. Bo Mathews said 35- year-old Magdiel Sanchez wasn’t obeying the officers’ commands before one shoth im with a gun and the other with a Taser on Tuesdaynig­ht. He said witnesses were yelling “he can’t hear you” before the officers fired, butthe officers didn’t hear them.

Mr. Sanchez died at the scene.The officer who fired the gun, Sgt. Chris Barnes, has been placed on administra­tive leave pending an investigat­ion.

Sex assault jail term

DOYLESTOWN ,Pa. — A Pennsylvan­ia man convicted of sexually assaulting six girls from the same family, fathering two children with oneof them, has been sentenced to 30 to 87 years in prison.

Authoritie­s say the girls’ parents had “gifted” their oldest daughter to 52-year-old Lee Donald Kaplan because he helped them financiall­y whenthey broke with their Amish faith.

Kaplan was sentenced Wednesday in Bucks County courton counts of child rape, statutory sexual assault and other charges. He was also classified by the court as a sexually violent predator.

Prosecutor­s make case

NEWYORK — Former U.S.Rep. Anthony Weiner deserves about two years in prison for engaging in sexting with a 15-year-old girl despite his claims that he has been reformed, prosecutor­s said Wednesday.

A Manhattan judge is scheduled to sentence the New York Democrat on Mondayfor transferri­ng obscene material to a minor.

Mr .Weiner, 53, said in a submission last week that he’s undergoing treatment andis profoundly sorry.
