Bipartisan cooperation is key on financial issues

-

In his Sept. 29 letter “The GOP Again Offers Us Voodoo Economics,” Mark Holm did not tell the complete story of the Clinton balanced budget. President Bill Clinton saw the advantage of reaching across the aisle to the Republican Congress in order to get the job done.

By comparison, President Barack Obama did not reach across the aisle, and under his term the national debt grew by $7.917 trillion for a 68 percent increase. Not exactly a stellar record. Under George W. Bush, the debt grew 101 percent, by $5.89 trillion, also less than stellar.

There’s plenty of blame to go around. Bipartisan action is required to address the financial issues facing our country. Both parties need to quit the posturing and find common ground through good-faith negotiations. And, like him or not, Donald Trump is the president, and his position must be included in the mix. This will be the first of the petrochemical facilities. One such plant breeds others, resembling what is known as Cancer Alley in Louisiana. We saw what happened with the petrochemical facilities during the recent hurricane in Texas. Waterlogged. You can be sure that such future facilities will be located on higher ground, like Beaver County.

It’s easy to feel powerless, but as the saying goes, “Don’t mourn, organize!” There are plenty of local organizations and movements to protect our quality of life, and they welcome our participation. Our housing costs would drastically increase.

Amazon has not been a “godsend” to Seattle, as some would have you believe. It would not be good for Pittsburgh, the city I love. Please make the public aware of what will really happen if Amazon were to come here. Do some of our politicians have a vested interest in this? Will any of them profit financially? I don’t know the answer to these questions, but it should definitely be investigated before any papers are signed.

Pittsburgh does not need AmazonHQ2. RAY J. BROSKEY

I know Steelers coach Mike Tomlin to be a man of faith, and a man who knows the importance of speaking into the lives of young people. What I do not understand is why Antonio Brown was allowed to disrespect property, his teammates and two of his coaches on the sideline in Baltimore, with no apparent discipline, except a scolding, from his head coach (“Mike Tomlin: Antonio Brown’s Outburst 'Doesn’t Need to Happen,’ ” Oct. 3). Hebrews 12:6 teaches: “For those whom the Lord loves, he disciplines.”

I know Mr. Tomlin loves Mr. Brown as well as all his players, and therefore he should be disciplined in love for his lack of respect toward others, especially those in authority. This will not only benefit Mr. Brown, but it will also teach high school and college football players that working hard and succeeding does not grant you license to disrespect. WILLIAM J. GIULIANI
