She went to CMU to study playwriting and never considered television until 2000 CMU grad Kourtney Kang (“How I Met Your Mother,” “Fresh Off the Boat”) returned to the school to host a weekend workshop in TV writing.

“I hadn’t thought about it. I didn’t know it was a collaborative, in-a-room experience,” she said. “We had two full, 10-hour days in a room. We broke a story for ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ and went off and wrote scenes and put it together and read it the next day and it was just an eye-opener. It brought me into this world.”

“Dynasty” marks her first time running a series and the “Dynasty” writers’ room is one floor above the “Star Trek: Discovery” writers’ room at Raleigh Studios. Ms. Patrick worked with “Discovery” showrunner and Franklin Park native Gretchen Berg on “Revenge.”

“We bonded over Pittsburgh on that show,” Ms. Patrick said. “I’m a big Steelers fan.”

Mark Pedowitz, president of The CW, said bringing back “Dynasty” is an effort to refresh its offerings for women after the end of “Reign” and “Vampire Diaries.”

“‘Dynasty’ gives us an [intellectual property] hook to at least get the conversation going,” he said. “We know there is an audience for it post-45. For younger than 45, it becomes a question, is it a new show for them? We hope it is. We hope they succeed.”
