South Fayette Golf, entertainment complex gets OK to apply for liquor license transfer
A high-end golf entertainment venue will be able to apply for a liquor license now that South Fayette commissioners have voted to accept a liquor license transfer.
Topgolf USA Pittsburgh, a Dallas-based chain with 33 locations in the U.S., plans to build a 65,000square-foot facility at the Newbury Market complex, near Interstate 79 and Route 50.
The sports entertainment center will have 102 hitting bays, where golfers can hit golf balls equipped with a microchip to detect accuracy and distance with each shot. Players hit toward a set of nets or targets from 20 to 240 yards away and a chip reader is able to calculate the score.
The golf venue will also offer lessons with certified pros and host leagues for competitive players.
The complex will have three bars — one on each level — plus a full-service restaurant, a lounge with pool tables, and a rooftop terrace that overlooks the entire venue.
Other interactive activities are available, and live entertainment will be featured.
The venue is expected to open in the spring and employ more than 400 workers.
It will be the first Topgolf in Pennsylvania.
“It is the fastest-growing entertainment concept in the U.S.,” Paul Namey, an attorney representing Topgolf USA Pittsburgh, said.
“There are various game types that can accommodate individuals or groups,” he said.
Topgolf intends to acquire a liquor license from Tarentum-based Frazer Restaurants, but before that could happen, commissioners had to approve a resolution for the intermunicipal transfer.
They voted 3-0 on Oct. 18 to approve the resolution. Commissioner Lisa Malosh was absent.
Mr. Namey told commissioners at a public hearing that “without a liquor license, it would not be economically feasible” for the facility to move forward.
“Alcohol sales are important for overall profitability,” Mr. Namey said.
Alcohol will be permitted throughout the facility, unless otherwise specified by the law, he said.
Anyone younger than 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
