Coghill wins in Pittsburgh’s District 4

Roofing contractor Anthony Coghill overcame three prior defeats to win a Pittsburgh City Council seat Tuesday, topping volunteer and activist Cletus Cibrone-Abate.

Mr. Coghill, 51, of Beechview, captured the Democratic nomination in May for the council seat representi­ng District 4, which includes Brookline, Carrick and Bon Air. He will replace outgoing Councilwom­an Natalia Rudiak, who declined to seek a third fouryear term on the all-Democrat council.

“Truly, I’m a blue-collar guy,” Mr. Coghill said Tuesday night. “I think what the people in my district wanted was someone who can roll up their sleeves and get to work. I’m honored to win tonight and roll up my sleeves and get to work.”

The South Hills district saw the only contested City Council seat in Tuesday’s general election. Council incumbents Theresa Kail-Smith in District 2, R. Daniel Lavelle in District 6 and Dan Gilman in District 8 all were unopposed in their re-election efforts.

Incumbent Mayor Bill Peduto also had no opposition on Pittsburgh ballots. He beat back Democratic primary challenges in May from Councilwom­an Darlene Harris and the Rev. John C. Welch. No incumbent Pittsburgh mayor has faced defeat since 1933.
