Boil-water advisory continues
level of turbidity detected last year was 0.16 at Hays Mine and 0.12 at the Aldrich treatment plant.
Ms. Walters said the turbidity at the Aldrich plant that led to the advisory was greater than 2 NTU, or twice the federal standard.
Pennsylvania American has two water intakes on the Monongahela River — at Becks Run in Baldwin Borough and the Aldrich intake, about 21 miles south of Becks Run in Washington County. Neither of the facilities has had any recent water treatment problems, the DEP said.
The Becks Run intake is allowed to withdraw up to 60 million gallons out of the Mon a day. That water is pumped two miles to PAWC’s Hays Mine Purification Plant in Baldwin Borough before it is distributed to customers.
The company can pull another 50 million gallons a day from the river at its Aldrich intake, where it’s treated at the purification plant along the river.
The turbidity problem affects only water supplied through the Aldrich intake and purification plant, Ms. Walters said.
Until the advisory is lifted, PAWC will maintain six water tankers to provide free water to customers at the following locations: Bethel Park Community Center: 5151 Park Ave.; Jefferson Hills Borough Police Department: 925 Old Clairton Road; Elrama Volunteer Fire Company, 17 Elrama Ave.; South Fayette Township Library: 515 Millers Run Road; South Park Township Library: 2575 Brownsville Road; and Upper St. Clair Community & Recreation Center: 1551 Mayview Road.
Customers should bring their own water containers. PAWC said on its website that it will inform customers “when tests show no bacteria and you no longer need to boil your water.”
