Boys build on WPIAL title by winning a state playoff game for the first time

The Montour boys soccer team continues to break new ground. Just a few days after claiming the first WPIAL championsh­ip in team history, the Spartans earned their first PIAA playoff win with a 3-0 triumph over Hollidaysb­urg in a Class 3A matchup at Hampton.

Nolan Hutter, Seth Schleicher and Brandon Wagner scored for the Spartans (173-1). Goalie Bryan Duggan stopped three shots to earn the shutout.

West Allegheny 7, DuBois 0: Evan Blunkowsky scored twice for the Indians (20-21) in a PIAA first-round win at Clearfield.

Erie Cathedral Prep 1, South Fayette 0: The WPIAL runner-up Lions were ousted in overtime at Fairview

Class 4A boys

North Allegheny 5, PineRichla­nd 0: In a matchup of WPIAL teams in the first round at Fox Chapel, the Tigers (20-2-1) pulled away from the Rams (14-6-2) thanks to a hat trick from senior Josh Luchini, a Lehigh recruit. Cam Yurick added the other two goals for North Allegheny. The victory sets up a showdown with Peters Township, a 1-0 winner Erie McDowell. The Tigers defeated the Indians, 2-1, for the WPIAL championsh­ip.

Class 2A boys

Quaker Valley 8, St. Marys 0: Sophomore Franky Fernandez tore through the St. Marys defense and racked up five goals in the Quakers’ first-round rout at Brockway. Ian Rodgers also scored for Quaker Valley (20-2), which rebounded from a doubleover­time loss Saturday to Shady Side Academy in the WPIAL title match.

Class 1A boys

Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic 5, Port Allegany 0: Joe Kearney’s hat trick propelled the Trojans (21-1) past Port Allegany at Moon. Kearney has scored 55 goals this season. Bryce Kopchak and Ryan Augustine also scored.

Class 4A girls

North Allegheny 2, PennTraffo­rd 0: In a first-round match at Fox Chapel, junior Alex Adams netted both goals and the Tigers (14-71) put an abrupt end to the season for WPIAL champion Penn-Trafford (17-4-1) just days after its thrilling 2-1 overtime victory over Norwin to claim the title.

Class 3A girls

Moon 7, Hollidaysb­urg 0: A five-goal performanc­e from Miami of Ohio recruit Delaney Snyder pushed the Tigers (23-0) into the second round. With that effort, Snyder boosted her season goal total to 50. In five playoff contests, Moon has outscored its opponents, 23-2.

Villa Maria 3, South Park 1: The Eagles saw their season end in a loss at Fairview.

Class 2A girls

Waynesburg 6, Harbor Creek 0: Freshman Rhea Kijowski had a hat trick, while sister Jillian passed out two assists, for the WPIAL champions Raiders (20-1) in their first-round romp at Seneca Valley.

Karns City 2, Freedom 1: The WPIAL runner-up was ousted at Clarion University.
