The MassMutual Pittsburgh Ice Rink is openuntil midnight on Light Up Night.

• 4:45-5 p.m.: Robert Morris University Island Sports Figure Skating kicks off the holiday season with an on-ice interpreta­tion of“Polar Express.”

• 5-5:30 p.m.: East End Kids group kicks off theevening’s festivitie­s.

• 5:30-6 p.m.: American Cancer Society’s Tribute of Light/Plaza Tree Lighting — The plazawill glow as more than 300 people carry hand-held Tribute of Light memorials, dedicated to someone touched by cancer. The ceremony culminates with the lighting of the 65-foot Plaza Christmas tree. Festivitie­s includeope­n skating periods for the public to “Skatefor a Cure.”

Donations during the ceremony have raised more than $12,000 annually for the AmericanCa­ncer Society.

Blast! The VIP Party

Hosted by Comcast and thrown by the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnershi­p, the event will be held in the upper lobby of the U.S. Steel Tower. Guests will have the rare opportunit­y to go ON the roof of the Steel Building (weather permitting) for this ticketed event featuring signature cocktails, fine foods, desserts and entertainm­ent. • CBS Radio Pittsburgh will present the NRG Santa Spectacula­r at Point State Park at 5 p.m. Friday, with the opening of Winter Wonderland booths and dance and music groups performing holiday features. Highlights include visits with Santa in his workshop; coffee and hot chocolate from the Salvation Army Canteen Truck; Farkleberr­y Cookies from Oakmont Bakery in the Warm-up Tent with NewsRadio 1020 KDKA; and93.7 the Fan photo booth.
