Man dies after crashing into Port Authority bus

A man died Thursday in a wrong-way crash into a Port Authority bus in Jefferson Hills. No passengers were on the bus.

The crash occurred about 4 p.m. in the 1300 block of Route 51, Jefferson Hills police said.

Port Authority spokesman Adam Brandolph said a man driving the wrong way on Route 51 struck the Y46 bus heading south. The vehicle’s driver was flown to Jefferson Regional Medical Center, where he later died, according to police.

The bus driver, who was trapped in the wreckage and had to be freed by emergency crews, was taken to UPMC Mercy with leg injuries, Mr. Brandolph said.

Lamar Rice was charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana, maintainin­g a drug-involved property and possession of ammunition by a convicted felon.

According to a complaint unsealed Thursday, agents obtained a search warrant for 321 Fifth Ave. in McKeesport on Monday and executed it Tuesday. Rice faces a detention hearing Friday before U.S. Magistrate Judge Robert Mitchell.

Special election date set for 35th District seat

The special election to replace state Rep. Marc Gergely in the 35th House District will be held Jan. 23.

Mr. Gergely, a Democrat from Whitehall, stepped down Nov. 6 after pleading guilty in August to charges stemming from an illegal gambling machine scandal.

Another special election will be held in March to replace former U.S. Rep. Tim Murphy , R-Upper St. Clair, in the 18th District.
