Used-car company that offers online sales, delivery coming to South Fayette

Newbury site seen as ‘open canvas’

- By Amy Philips-Haller

The newest company expected to be a tenant at Newbury Market in South Fayette is an online usedcar venture that allows customers to shop online from a nationwide inventory and then delivers the vehicle to their front door.

Carvana, a Phoenixbased e-commerce car dealership, was established in 2012 and now serves 39 markets in the country. It provides financing as well as free delivery, sometimes as soon as the next day.

In seven of its locations, Carvana offers an unusual vending-machine delivery, in which buyers go to the site to pick up their car and watch as an automated system delivers the vehicle by lowering it from a top floor of a five- to eight-story glass building.

For those who don’t live near a vending-machine location, Carvana offers a $200 airfare stipend to fly to one of its sites.

Although Carvana has confirmed it is coming to Newbury Market, a company spokeswoman would not comment on specific plans for the site, such as whether the vending-machine service will be provided there.

“Carvana has committed to come to Newbury,” said Jared Imperatore, a South Fayette resident and vice president of Jones Lang LaSalle retail brokerage.

“It is one of the most sought-after companies in the country. They chose Newbury after looking at 24 sites in the region.”

Brett Malky, president of EQA Landmark, developer of Newbury, told South Fayette commissioners Nov. 8 that Jones Lang LaSalle, a Fortune 500 global real estate firm, has been hired to lead future development at Newbury.

Currently, JLL is talking with a fitness center, grocery stores and a fourscreen movie theater with a restaurant and brewery. The focus for Newbury, at Route 50 and Interstate 79, will be entertainment, health care, and food and beverages.

Mr. Imperatore called Newbury an “open canvas that we are able to design on.

“We will create a synergy that will compel people to come back repeatedly.”

Mr. Imperatore said since the TopGolf sports entertainment venue entered into agreement with EQA, it has generated interest from other parties.

Texas-based TopGolf is scheduled to open in summer 2018.

“Newbury Market is essentially going to be a gathering place for the residents of South Fayette,” Mr. Imperatore said.

Newbury is recovering from a decision by UPMC in September to pull out of its agreement to build a $211.2 million hospital approved by township commissioners in August.
