The Marist men’s basketball team has players from Italy, Sweden, Iceland, Montenegro, Denmark and Finland.

Their latest addition hails from Western Pennsylvania.

Central Catholic senior Luke Nedrow was mulling over a couple of Division II offers when he made the drive to Poughkeepsie, N.Y., for an official visit to Marist two weekends ago. He left with his first Division I offer anda few days later officially became a future Red Foxes player when he signed his letterof intent.

Nedrow, who lives in Fox Chapel, is a 6-foot-8 forward who led Central Catholic in scoring his junior season when he averaged 17.9 points per game. Nedrow has size and a good shooting stroke from the perimeter, a combination that caught the attention of Marist coaches when they watched him play in AAU tournaments overthe summer.

Up until his visit to Marist, Nedrow’s list of offers consisted of PSAC schools Shippensburg, Mercyhurstand Pitt-Johnstown. Some Patriot League and Ivy League schools were showing interest. Nedrow said he would have likely chosen Shippensburg if Marist wouldn’t have offered, but it did, and Nedrow couldn’thave been happier.

“I was super excited. It was a dream come true. All the hard work I put in came to fruition. It was surreal,” Nedrowsaid.

Nedrow said that Marist appealed to him in a variety ofways.

“I have a good relationship with the coaches. The campusis beautiful. It’s basically a Patriot League or Ivy League education, but with a mid-major basketball program,” Nedrow said of Marist, which competes in the MAAC with the likes of Monmouth, Niagara and Quinnipiac.

Nedrow comes from a basketball family. His father Gil Nedrow and uncle Scott Nedrow starred at Ringgold in the 1970s. Gil went on to play at Roanoke College and Scottat Pitt.

Luke Nedrow is the fourth WPIAL senior to commit to a Division I school. The others are Mars’ Robby Carmody (Notre Dame), Laurel Highlands’ Bryce Laskey (Saint Francis, Pa.) and Quaker Valley’s Coletrane Washington(Drexel).

For one of the top hurdlers in the country, “It’s all aboutthe U.”

Pine-Richland senior Thomas Burns, brother of Steelers cornerback Artie Burns, signed with Miami. Burns verbally committed to play football at Miami when he was a sophomore at Miami’s Northwestern High School, but decommitted in May. He’ll still be a Cane, only in a different sport.

Burns, who moved to the Pine-Richland School District over the summer to live with Artie, won a Florida state title in the 300-meter hurdles his junior season and a month later blazed to the second-fastest high school time ever in that event at a meet in New Mexico. Burns is also a defensive back on the Pine-Richland footballteam.
