Goffin upsets Federer

-

A match against a man he had never lost to, Roger Federer looked to be cruising toward a shot at a seventh ATP Finals title. David Goffin had other ideas.

The Belgian rallied in the semifinals Saturday to claim the biggest win of his career and stun the favorite, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, in London.

“It is the best win of my career, for sure,” said Goffin, who lost all six of his previous encounters against Federer.

His opponent Sunday in the final will be Grigor Dimitrov after the Bulgarian defeated American Jack Sock, 4-6, 6-0, 6-3.

After defeating a wounded Rafael Nadal in his opening match, Goffin was thrashed in just 74 minutes by Dimitrov, and qualified for the semis with a comfortable win over Dominic Thiem.

Goffin is only the sixth man to defeat Nadal and Federer in the same tournament.

Golf

Sung Hyun Park was in the palmetto bushes, near the base of the tree, in the bunkers and going nowhere in the CME Group Tour Championship. What looked to be a victory lap for the 24-year-old rookie from South Korea turned into a free-for-all at Tiburon Golf Club in Naples, Fla. Park at least was in solid position, one shot out of a four-way tie for the lead in her bid to become the first rookie since Nancy Lopez in 1978 to sweep all the major LPGA Tour awards.

College hockey

Brady Ferguson had a goal and an assist as the Robert Morris men’s team (5-7-1, 5-5-1 AHC) earned a 4-0 victory against visiting AIC (4-82, 3-5-2).

Figure skating

World junior champion Alina Zagitova recovered from disappointment in the short program with flawless jumps in the free to win the Internationaux de France in Grenoble, France, and qualify for the Grand Prix Final. Two-time world champion Javier Fernandez secured victory by a comfortable margin in the men’s competition. Zagitova, 15, posted a season’s best free skate score of 151.34, winning with an overall total of 213.80 points. Fernandez, after his shaky free skate, saw his nearly 14-point lead over Shoma Uno of Japan reduced to 10.39 points.
