BIRDIE EYE VIEWS

Luxury home overlooks 10th hole at Nevillewood

For designer Kristen Hancock, the chance to remake 6300 Crown Place in Collier was a dream come true.

“I have loved this house since I was a little girl,” she said.

She was a babysitter for the house’s original owners and spent many hours there as a teen. Its grand double staircase was her stage.

“I used to walk down that staircase and sing. It has the majesty of a Hollywood movie.”

Imagine her delight when she was asked to update the palatial home that stands by The Club at Nevillewood’s 10th hole. She was operations and design manager

for Primrose Homes, which started the project. It was finished by builder Brad Herbert.

Now the 12,000-square-foot house with five bedrooms, five full bathrooms and three powder rooms is on the market for $2.495 million (MLS No. 1291092) with Catherine Blandi of Howard Hanna Real Estate (www.howardhanna.com or 724-831-0891). It is open by appointment.

Ms. Hancock, now president of Elemental Design (www.lmntldsgn.com), returned to Pittsburgh after 12 years working in New York City. She said her main goal on this project was to update the space and make it more livable.

The makeover started on the exterior; the previously painted brick was done over in a soft pink hue, but all of the sandstone was left natural. The entry has a twostory, columned portico and flanking glass towers. The house sits on one of the area’s highest sites and has views all the way to Downtown.

In the rear, a rooftop space atop a cylindrical tower takes full advantage of the views of The Club at Nevillewood and its golf course. The house also has several walls of two-story windows.

The 27- by- 20-foot main entry welcomes visitor with a floating double staircase that appears to touch the coffered ceiling. Each ceiling section has a recessed light that glows like diamonds.

The stone floor with gray veins is highlighted by a new wall color, Light French Gray by Sherwin-Williams. The hue runs throughout the home, replacing wallpaper in many places. Soft enough to stand on its own, the color gives depth to the expansive space.

The entry is at the center of a wishbone design, with a 43- by- 28-foot main room that was reworked by Ms. Hancock. A 20-foot fireplace wall now wears antique mirror tiles set at an angle to reflect light back into the space. Underfoot, 6¼-inchwide plank floors have been stained a deep walnut.

To the left is the 31- by- 23foot kitchen, which was also changed by the designer.

“It was large but a lot of wasted space,” she said. “We used new custom cabinetry by Trilogy Cabinets & Design.”

The redesign includes a prep island and clean-up island and turned round storage space in the rear of the room into banquette seating. The cabinets have a modern farmhouse look with a whitewashed finish that complements the gray stone backsplash. The new quartz counters are Brittanica from Cambria.

The Thermador appliance package includes a steam oven, a warming drawer and six-burner professional stove with a pot filler on the wall above it.

The secondary living space includes two gas fireplaces, more custom cabinetry, a formal living room and an office or sitting area.

In the library, the twostory tin ceiling towers over custom woodwork and tile floors set in a herringbone pattern. A wall of windows overlooks the 10th green and a custom cherry spiral staircase floats between the floors.

The 18- by- 17-foot master bedroom suite was completely redesigned. Originally a very large bedroom and small closet, the suite’s layout now has smaller sleeping quarters, a larger master bath and a large closet with built-in seating. French doors open to views of the golf course. A fireplace adds comfort.

The bathroom features Calacatta Gold marble on the floor, counters and several wall surfaces, including the shower. Its custom jet mosaic tile feature and a separate clawfoot soaking tub are nice additions. Custom built-in cabinetry holds linens and large double vanity sinks flank a double stack of drawers.

The other four bedrooms range in size from 18 by 17 feet to 38 by 15 feet. Each has a private bath with marble counters.

The main room on the lower level measures 62 by 39 feet and includes a full kitchen with a stone bar and gas-burning fireplace. Another 27- by- 20-foot room features a sauna and soaking tub. There is an alarm system and zoned, forced-air gas heating and air-conditioning.

Ms. Hancock said the house’s crowning glory is its beautiful, expansive spaces.

“It is perfect for all phases of family life.”
