South Fayette wrestling coach Rick Chaussard summed it up perfectly.

“Burrell is No. 1 until someone knocks them off,” Chaussard said. “I have the utmost respect for Burrell and its program. They seem to reload every year. It’s going to take a valiant effort to beat them.”

Chaussard would like his Lions to be the team to end Burrell’s 11-year domination of the WPIAL Class 2A team tournament.

“Based on the way we finished last year, and having lost one starter to graduation, we come into the season with hopes,” Chaussard said. “Our goal is to win the WPIAL title.”

Burrell is the clear favorite with 10 starters returning.

“What we’ve accomplished over the past decade speaks for itself,” Burrell coach Josh Shields said. “Every title is special. Our goal every season is to repeat as WPIAL champions and continue the streak.”

Burrell has made 15 consecutive appearances in the WPIAL title match, dating back to 2003, and has claimed 12 titles.
