Morton leads Butler to win

-

Pitt coach Kevin Stallings made the trip from Oakland to Pine Township to take a firsthand look at Butler sophomore guard Ethan Morton in the Pine-Richland tournament. He certainly got an eyeful. Morton was dominant as he scored a game-high 35 points — including 10 of 13 from the free-throw line, 11 of 19 from the field and three 3-pointers — to lead the Golden Tornadoes to a 75-65 opening-night victory against Highlands. The Rams made a push to tie it late, but Morton was clutch down the stretch with 13 in the fourth quarter. Stallings already made Morton an offer to play for Pitt. ago and he hasn’t lost his long-range touch. The Blue Devils’ 5-foot-9 senior guard drilled 11 from beyond the arc as part of his game-high 44 points in their home-opening victory.

Mars 91, Avonworth 40: Notre Dame recruit Robby Carmody played through a shoulder injury for much of the latter part of last season, but he appears healed as he dropped in 29 points to lead the Planets to a victory against the Antelopes.

Quaker Valley 70, Sto-Rox 50: Academy 26: The Rams might be without senior Phil Jurkovec for a while, but they still have plenty of talent to hold the fort until he fulfills his football commitments. Collin Luellen stepped up with 19 points, including four 3-pointers, and Dan Petcash popped in a game-high 21 points as the Class 6A No. 1 came away with an easy victory against the Knights.

Westinghouse 42, Central Valley 40: against the Cougars. Shandon Marshall led the way as he scored 15 of his gamehigh 33 points in the fourth quarter to stymie a Yough comeback.

Seton LaSalle 61, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 54: Dante Spadafora netted a game-high 19, but it wasn’t enough as Jakob Richardson scored 17 and George Mike added 14 as the Rebels ousted the Class 2A No. 2 Chargers in their season opener.
