SPRUCING UP

Deck the halls (and living rooms, bedrooms ....)

- By Patricia Sheridan Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

It’s time to deck the halls, the living rooms, the bedrooms and every other space for the holidays. Make the right choices now, and your home will have something to celebrate long after the tree’s been tossed and the snow has melted.

Decorative pillows and candles are inexpensive and quick ways to change things up, but for a lasting redo consider something more substantial such as a dining table, cabinet, lamp or comfy chair. Local furniture retailers have an expansive variety of furnishings and accessories from contemporary to classic, traditional to transitional.

Whether you’re getting ready for a seasonal soirée or just cozy cocooning, it’s worth turning off that screen and getting into neighborhood shops to see what’s in store. Here’s what we turned up at local retailers when we went over the rivers and through the woods:

Antiquarian Shop, Sewickley: The Discoveries chest is handmade in Itay and the perfect pick-me-up for any nook it occupies. Shown here in the Bianco Noche finish, it also comes in the reverse finish. For a more traditional look, the same company makes an heirloom chest in a worn French blue finish. The shop also carries lamps. accessories and upholstery.

Arhaus, Shadyside and

Pine Township: A two-door hand carved sculptural cabinet from the Mandara White Collection holds up to 12 shelves inside. It is shown here in Jepara white, but also comes in Jepara natural, and it is available as a four-door media console.

Artifacts, West End: On the showroom floor is a stunning round mahogany Patent Jupe dining table with self-storing leaves from Theodore Alexander’s Althorp Living History Collection. The top is made in eight triangular segments that pull out and up to extend the table up to 78 inches in diameter.

On the second floor is a one-of-a-kind, hand-carved Hindu deity statue from India. It might be just the thing to elevate the spirit of your home for the holidays and beyond. The store has a plethora of conversation pieces, paintingsand antiques.

Perlora, South Side: Red makes any room pop! The Eclipse table lamp will certainly light up your interior life while adding a contemporary twist. Also on the floor are a modern red Italian dining chair in polypropylene with chrome legs and a red leather club chair with chrome base from Thayer Coggin.

Today’s Home/DFO, Ross and Mt. Lebanon: You can’t go wrong with a recliner. Bradington Young chairs are made in America and available at the Ross location in a handsome tweedy fabric as well as in leather. The DFO (Designer Furniture Outlet) on the second floor has a deer and wreath motif stool and a Lillian August Ally dining chair in bright blue velvet. Accessory trays, lamps and ceramics are scattered around the showroom, waiting to be discovered.

Weisshouse, Shadyside: Give your home that warm and fuzzy feeling for the holidays with a pair of comfy low Irondale Caleb chairs in ivory angora by Four Hands. Another inviting piece is the green velvet chaise bench from Bernhardt. It’s perfect for any season, but especially attractive during the holidays. Paintings, lamps and one-of-a-kind vintage objects canbe found here as well.
