McKeesport football star Layton Jordan is all about energy. He plays with a lot of it, puts a good bit of it into his school work, mentions the word frequently when speaking to him, and was seeking a college where he felt it on campus.

Every time he visited Temple, he said it was all around him.

“Lot of energy,” said Jordan, a 6-foot-3, 205-pound senior. “And then on my official visit, my mom liked it. I know that they’ll help me. And I’ve got a chance to play there. That’s what did it for me.”

Jordan committed to Temple Dec. 7, a few days after taking his official visit. Jordan was a Post-Gazette Fabulous 22 selection as a running back-defensive back his senior season when he rushed for 1,313 yards (averaging 9.4 yards per carry) and scored 16 touchdowns. He was recruited to Temple to play linebacker. He also considered a couple of MAC schools, including Toledo, Akron and Bowling Green.

What’s interesting is that a player who used to play for one of McKeesport’s rivals helped lure Jordan to Temple. Delvon Randall is a former Gateway star who is having an excellent career for the Owls. A junior safety, Randall was the only Temple player named a first-team all-American Athletic Conference selection. Randall hosted Jordan during his official visit and Jordan said it added to his comfort level at the school.

“I knew him and I liked him. When I went around his friends, they saw the energy in me and I know that I’m safe up there and I’ve got friends who are going to steer me in the right way, football and homework and all that other stuff,” Jordan said.

Randall is one of three former WPIAL standouts playing at Temple. The others are redshirt freshman offensive lineman Griffin Sestili (North Allegheny) and redshirt freshman tight end Steve Petrick (Norwin). Former Sto-Rox star quarterback Adam DiMichele is an assistant coach.

Jordan also plays basketball at McKeesport and scored 21 points to lead the Tigers to a win Saturday.

With Jordan soon moving from the Pittsburgh area to Philadelphia, the question is will he become an Eagles fan? His answer might surprise you.

“No, sir. I’m always going to be a Patriots fan,” he said.

Ramer commits … again

A day after being offered a scholarship by Virginia, Beaver’s Bryce Ramer committed to play football there June 26. But exactly three months later, Ramer decided he no longer wanted to attend the school and reopened his recruitment. Last week, he put an end to it once again.

Ramer, a 6-foot-5, 300pound offensive lineman, committed to Ohio last week. Ramer tweeted his decision and began by saying, “This recruiting process is finally coming to an end and it was one heck of a process.”

Ramer was named firstteam all-Beaver Valley Conference as an offensive tackle and defensive tackle. He is the second Beaver player in as many seasons to commit to an FBS school, joining Darius Wise, who plays at Colorado State.

Commitments

• Central Catholic senior football player Khalil Weathers to Penn.

• Beaver senior volleyball player Macy McElhaney to West Virginia.

• Beaver senior volleyball player Cortney Lambert to California, Pa.

• Mount Pleasant senior wrestler Al Miscovich to Pitt-Johnstown.
