Barrels to Beethoven Christmas Party

-

#DrummerGirl: The sound of steel pans has a way of instantly transporting listeners to a place with the aroma of coconuts, tropical breezes and cold drinks, so why not learn to play yourself to paradise? That was what Barrels to Beethoven’s co-founders Leigh Solomon Pugliano and her husband David had in mind during the 10th “Lets Play Pan” Caribbean Christmas party at 5852 Baum Blvd., Saturday night.

Barrels to Beethoven is a social enterprise created to teach the steel pan technique and to keep the history and building of the pan alive. Ms. Pugliano was helping do just that. Originally from Guyana, she brought her love of the steel pan instrument to Pittsburgh along with her father Phil Solomon, who founded the first steel pan manufacturing company in the United States. The event was generously sponsored by TheraFusion owner Alice Beckett-Rumberger (with her husband David). “These are the best parties ever and really Pittsburgh’s best kept secret,” said Ms. BeckettRumberger. Guests were taught the basics and within minutes were playing Kumbaya. Who knew it could sound so hip? A dinner followed with a special Caribbean dish called Pepper Pot, which is a traditional Christmas food.

“I do love the holidays,” said Ms. Pugliano. She also loves to teach and thanked everyone for supporting Barrels to Beethoven, which provides scholarships and school programs. Guests were playing pretty well by the end of the evening and were bonding over the shared experience.

Enjoying a magical mix of music, culture and fun were Brett Staggs, Dave Witter, Albert Cheng, Carrie McCann, Jason McRoy, Maureen Olinzock, Mike Wolfe, Sarah Boice, Tyler McLaughlin, Luana Harris-Scott, Julian Floro, Samantha Lambert, Joey Kennedy, Stephanie Curry and Julie and Mike Tarle.
