PAAR is here to help sexual assault victims be heard

-

I am writing to thank Bruce Thompson, whose letter spoke of his sexual abuse at the hands of a grade-school teacher (Dec. 14, “Sexual Abuse Victims, the Time Is Ripe to Speak”). Mr. Thompson states that it took him 20 years to break his silence. He also reports that it was healing for him to reveal his abuser and get him removed from the classroom.

Mr. Thompson spoke eloquently and knowledgeably about the importance of learning about sexual assault — that it is related to power and control — and how important it is for some survivors to pursue justice.

Mr. Thompson’s letter provides an opportunity to remind our community about the services of Pittsburgh Action Against Rape and to urge them who have hesitated to seek help or to speak out that they may find it healing, as he did.

PAAR has provided services to victims of sexual violence for more than 45 years. The staff of experienced and compassionate counselors and medical and legal advocates help more than 3,000 each year. In the current climate, it is hoped that men and women will feel more empowered than ever to disclose their experiences of being sexually harassed or assaulted, following years of silence and pain.

I urge those who are still hesitant to disclose their experiences to seek the services of PAAR. PAAR understands the complexities that victims and survivors face and will work with them to feel safe, heard and respected.

In addition, PAAR provides education and prevention services to community groups, schools and universities in our area.

We need brave people, like Mr. Thompson and others who have come forward, to let those who are afraid to speak up know that it can be healing to break their silence. PAAR will be here to provide any help necessary to aid in healing. SUE A. JAMISON
