Sneak preview of things to come?

-

He’s making a list. He’s checking it twice. The Dribbler knows what would make this season really, really nice.

So, he put together his high school basketball wish list and sent it away to the North Pole.

A sneak preview of what The Dribbler would like to see this season …

• A player score 60 points in a game. Fewer than a dozen WPIAL players have ever done it. Southmoreland’s Cali Konek scored 59 as a freshman at Imani Christian two years ago, so she might have the best odds. Former Highlands star Micah Mason was the most recent to do it, scoring 64 in 2011.

• A girl dunk in a game. Scoring 60 points would make local news. A high school girl jamming one down would be a hit nationally. The obvious choices would be Chartiers-Houston’s 6-foot-1 Alexa Williamson or Winchester Thurston’s 6-foot-2 Ayanna Townsend, athletic post players headed to Division I schools.

• Robby Carmody and Ethan Morton playing 1-on1. Mars and Butler aren’t scheduled to play each other, depriving fans the opportunity of seeing two big-time talents go head to head. Let’s find a gym, get the two together, charge a few bucks for admission and donate the money to the charity of the winner’s choice.

• A mandatory “dress down” game for coaches. That’s right, no suits, sweaters or even collared shirts. The more informal the better. Can you imagine Tim McConnell screaming at officials wearing a 76ers jersey or Joe Salvino strolling the sidelines while rocking jeans shorts and a cut-off Monessen basketball shirt? Exactly. Let’s get it done.

The Dribbler wishes Happy Holidays to all!

Here are his thoughts on this week’s top games:

Boys

Pine-Richland at Butler, 8 p.m. Friday — While shopping for a Christmas tree a few weeks back, a salesman asked the The Dribbler what kind of pine he prefers. The Dribbler fired back, “Pine-Richland.” Needless to say, the salesman was a bit confused. The Dribbler typically sides with Pine-Richland, but not in this rematch of last year’s WPIAL Class 6A final. In front of their home crowd, Ethan Morton and company will get some revenge. Winner: Butler.

Penn Hills at Fox Chapel, 7:30 p.m. Friday — Goin’ to the chapel and we’re gonna … watch what should be a darn good game. These two earned shares of the Class 6A Section 3 title last season and entered the week with unbeaten records. Penn Hills can really fill the basket. The Indians became the first WPIAL team this season to hit 100 points in a 37-point rout of section foe Plum. The Indians won’t reach 100 Friday, but they will get a big win. Winner: Penn Hills.

Trinity at Laurel Highlands, 7:30 p.m. Friday — If The Dribbler were to rank the top all-around athletes in the WPIAL, Trinity’s Joey Koroly could be in the top five. Koroly is a 4,000-yard rusher in football and a 1,000-point scorer in basketball. Talk about an excellent career. Koroly is one of two players from the 1K Club playing in this game. Laurel Highlands sharpshooter Bryce Laskey is in there, too. In what will be an excellent road win ... Winner: Trinity.

Jeannette vs. East Allegheny, 8 p.m. Saturday (Jamfest at Penn Hills) — Want two reasons to watch this game? OK. T.J. Banks and Robert Kennedy. Enough said. They were both Fabulous 22 picks in football and they can both hoop, too. The Jeannette football team beat East Allegheny, with Kennedy batting down a 2-point conversion pass intended for Banks that would have tied the score. Kennedy and pals will get the best of EA again. Winner: Jeannette.

Girls

Penn Hills vs. Winchester Thurston, 4:30 p.m. Saturday (Jamfest at Penn Hills) — When will star center Ayanna Townsend return to the lineup? That’s the big question right now for Winchester Thurston. With Townsend, a Xavier recruit, at full health, the Bears are the best team in WPIAL Class 1A and can play with a team as talented as 6A Penn Hills. Without her, things get a lot tougher. There’s a chance she could be ready for this one. Regardless … Winner: Penn Hills.

South Fayette vs. Mohawk, 6 p.m. Wednesday (Bethel Park tournament) — The Dribbler always wanted a mohawk. Well, at least ever since first watching Mr. T and the A-Team on TV. Unfortunately, The Dribbler’s parents didn’t like the idea. Years later, Mrs. Dribbler doesn’t like the idea, either. Thus, he must settle for watching Mohawk play, which isn’t all that bad because the Warriors are pretty talented. South Fayette is a little better, though. Winner: South Fayette.

Bishop Canevin vs. Montverde Academy, Fla., 4 p.m. Thursday (Holiday Basketball Classic of the Palm Beaches) — Sunny skies. Beautiful beaches. One of the top teams in the country. That’s what will be awaiting Canevin when it makes a trip to the Sunshine State next week. Canevin is very talented, but the Crusaders will be the heavy underdog against a loaded Montverde team ranked in the top 25 nationally. Winner: Montverde Academy.
