Jevon Carter and Sagaba Konate each had double-doubles to lead No. 10-ranked West Virginia to its 11th victory in a row, 86-69, Saturday against visiting Fordham (5-7).
The Mountaineers (11-1) started out a little sluggish but managed a 16-point lead with four minutes left in the first half. Mountaineers coach Bob Huggins wasn’t impressed with the win.
“We played bad and scored 86,” Huggins said. “That’s not a bad deal when you play really bad and score 86, and we played bad. Played bad, shot it bad, passed it bad.”
Carter had 10 points and a career-high 12 assists and Konate finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds, both getting their second double-doubles of the season. Daxter Miles Jr. led the Mountaineers with 21 points and Lamont West added 15.
“[We’ve] got to turn it up [for Big 12 play],” Miles said. “[It’s] different level competition and guys need to be ready to be ready to play.
Duquesne
Sean Lloyd Jr. scored 10 of his 19 points in the final 11 in the final 11 minutes and finished with seven rebounds to help Southern Illinois (8-5) beat Duquesne, 74-64, in the Continental Tire Las Vegas Classic in Nevada. Tarin Smith hit two free throws to pull the Dukes within one point with 1:40 left, but the Salukis scored the final nine points, hitting 7 of 8 free throws in the final
minute. Smith finished with a career-high 26 points for Duquesne (9-4), which had its seven-game win streak snapped.
North Carolina
No. 5 North Carolina put a shocking loss to Wofford behind it with an 86-72 win against Ohio State in the CBS Sports Classic in New Orleans. Theo Pinson and Joel Berry II scored 19 points apiece for the Tar Heels (11-2) against the Buckeyes (104). Cameron Johnson — a graduate transfer from Pitt — scored 13 points in just his second game for North Carolina.
Kentucky
Aaron Holiday capped a 20point performance with a pivotal driving scoop and two free throws in the final 33 seconds, and UCLA (9-3) upset No. 7 Kentucky(9-2), 83-75, in New Orleans.
Tennessee
Jordan Bowden scored 17 points and No. 21 Tennessee (9-2) shot 59 percent after halftime to beat Wake Forest (7-5), 79-60.
