Once the house is demolished, the township plans to widen the turning radius at the intersection at the bottom of Snyder Street.
Residential parking with a permeable surface, not paved, because of water issues in that area, will be added as well, township manager Tim Rogers said.
“Parking is desperately needed. On-street parking is a real problem in that area,” he said.
The house originally was appraised at $53,000, but after asbestos was discovered there, the price dropped to $47,600, he said.
The board also held its reorganization meeting on Tuesday, with new District Judge Daniel Konieczka administering the oath of office to returning commissioners Lori Mizgorski, Tom McElhone and James Boyle.
Mrs. Mizgorski is starting her third term as commissioner after first being elected in 2009.
Mr. McElhone has served the township for 28 years, and Mr. Boyle for 26. Wayne Skelley is the newest commissioner.
He joined council after Edward Duss retired two years ago.
“We have a gracious group of people here who are committed to the good of Shaler,” said Commissioner David Shutter, after he was unanimously re-elected president of the commissioners.
“You’re only a heartbeat away,” Mr. Shutter told William Cross as he was re-elected vice president.
“It’s been an enjoyable 22 years so far,” Mr. Cross said.
