Giant Eagle closing store on Old William Penn Highway

The Giant Eagle on Old William Penn Highway in Monroevill­e is scheduled to close on Feb. 3, according to the O’Hara-based grocer. The lease was set to expire this spring. The store, which opened in 1976, employed about 50 workers. The store is two miles from a larger location at 4010 Monroevill­e Blvd., where the company recently invested more than $1 million, Giant Eagle noted.

Tiny nonprofits get boost with ‘small and mighty’ grants

The Pittsburgh Foundation will award $308,821 to 22 nonprofits through its Small and Mighty grants program. Those selected will receive grants ranging from $4,800 to $16,500. Among the winners are a mentoring program for AfricanAme­rican males at Brashear High School, a furniture bank that assists families in transition and youth aging out of foster care, and a diaper bank for needy families. To qualify, nonprofits’ operating budgets must not exceed $600,000.

PAA asks bankruptcy court to approve settlement

The Pittsburgh Athletic Associatio­n is asking bankruptcy court to approve a settlement with a former employee over claims he was harassed by a manager based on his gender and had to resign because of a hostile work environmen­t. Under the agreement, former worker Nicholas Logan will receive $22,500, plus $5,000 to cover attorney fees and costs, according to documents filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court. The Oakland-based club, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in May, admitted no wrongdoing but settled to avoid the expense of further litigation, the documents said. A hearing on the settlement is scheduled for Jan. 30. The club filed its plan of reorganiza­tion Dec. 22, which must be approved by bankruptcy court.

Drivers can expect to pay more for gasoline in 2018

The average price of a gallon of regular gasoline is expected to go up about 8 cents in 2018, according to the annual Fuel Price Outlook put out by GasBuddy, a Bostonbase­d company that helps motorists find the cheapest gasoline in a given area. The average price in the U.S. is projected to rise to $2.57 a gallon, the highest price since 2014. The nation’s current average is $2.49 a gallon, according to GasBuddy data, and could peak at $2.89 a gallon in April.

Neiman Marcus names Ralph Lauren exec to be CEO

Luxury retailer Neiman Marcus Group is naming a Ralph Lauren executive to succeed its CEO and President Karen Katz, who is retiring. The Dallas-based retailer, which has been looking to cut its debt from leveraged buyouts, says that Geoffroy van Raemdonck will start Feb. 12. Mr. Van Raemdonck, who was a group vice president for Europe, Middle East, and its Africa business at Ralph Lauren, led the transforma­tion of all Ralph Lauren brands across all stores, wholesale and digital.

Co-founder Kalanick plans to sell 29% of his Uber stock

Uber co-founder Travis Kalanick once boasted that he’d never sold any of his 10 percent stake in the on-demand transporta­tion company. But that was in 2016, before he was ousted as CEO, before Uber’s board of directors installed new leadership, before early Uber investor Benchmark sued him for fraud, and before investors loosened his iron grip on the company. After a tumultuous 2017 left him sidelined, Mr. Kalanick is starting the new year with plans to sell 29 percent of his stake to Japanese conglomera­te SoftBank, according to a Bloomberg report. A spokespers­on for Mr. Kalanick declined to comment.
