Jeremy Irons in ‘Long Day’s Journey’ among optional shows on London tour

-

The Post-Gazette’s annual London Theater Tour, March 4-11, when the magnolias are in bloom, has added options beyond the three included plays:

• “Fanny & Alexander,” starring Penelope Wilton (“Downton Abbey”), a new, large-cast adaptation of Ingmar Bergman’s film, at the Old Vic Theatre.

• “Witness for the Prosecution,” Agatha Christie’s detective story staged at London’s magnificent County Hall, reminiscent of the courtroom in the 1957 film.

• “Network,” starring Bryan Cranston, adapted by Lee Hall (“Billy Elliot”), at the National Theatre.

An additional option is Jeremy Irons in “Long Day’s Journey Into Night.” Other possibilities are “Girl From the North Country” by Conor McPherson with the songs of Bob Dylan; Juliet Stevenson and Lia Williams in “Mary Stuart”; and “Brief Encounter,” a charming blend of stage and screen by the inventive Kneehigh company. We can assist on advance tickets for these and other titles.

Critic’s Choice tours are informal, led by Christopher Rawson, PG senior theater critic. The group stays at the Radisson Edwardian Kenilworth Hotel, in walking distance of the British Museum and West End theaters, Covent Garden and Trafalgar Square. Included is a welcoming dinner and guided London walking tour.

Each day there will be an optional tour or recommended museum (including the two exhibits of the collections of Charles I and II at the Royal Academy and Queen’s Gallery). You will also want to strike out on your own, using the bus and subway pass provided, to enjoy London’s palaces, street life, museums, shops, pubs, cathedrals and art. Included are round-trip air between Pittsburgh and London; transfers between the London airport and hotel; full English breakfast daily; welcoming dinner; three theater tickets; a London bus and subway pass; a guided London walking tour; taxes, VAT and gratuities on included items; and Mr. Rawson’s guidance.

The basic tour price is $3,499, double-occupancy; the single supplement is $544. This price is based on air fares that fluctuate. Registration requires a deposit of $500 per person and completed Reservation Request Form. All payments are to be made to Gulliver’s Travels Inc., 460 S. Graham St., Pittsburgh PA 15232-1210.
