Central Catholic tops Seneca Valley in OT

A thrilling end to regulation and a methodical overtime helped Central Catholic pull out a 55-47 Class 6A Section 1 victory at Seneca Valley.

Cole Mason sent the game into overtime by dropping in a short jump shot as time expired. The Vikings (7-6, 6-1) then hit 8 of 10 free throws in the extra period.

Luke Nedrow paced the Vikings with 12 points. David Ritchie had 12 for Seneca Valley (8-6, 2-5). The Raiders missed the front ends of oneand-one free-throw opportunit­ies twice in the final minute of regulation.

A game removed from scoring 34 points and being outscored by 31, host North Hills (3-11, 1-6) rebounded by crushing Section 1 foe Butler, the fourth-ranked team in 6A, 82-55. Kam Taylor netted 19 of his game-high 35 in the third quarter. Jordan Albright added 15 and Alex Brown 10. Sophomore Ethan Morton had 26 for Butler (13-2, 5-2).

Connor Ryan had 15 points and Austin Ryan 13 for Class 5A No. 4 Moon (12-2) in its 52-48 victory at secondrank­ed Franklin Regional in non-section play. The Panthers (11-3) saw their fivegame winning streak end.

Jett Roesing connected on 8 of 14 3-point attempts and finished with 30 points for Class 2A No. 2 Sewickley Academy (10-2, 6-1) in its 8668 Section 3 win at Sto-Rox (3-11, 2-6).

A fourth-quarter rally helped Class 4A No. 3 New Castle (10-3, 5-2) get past Section 2 foe Central Valley, 49-42. Visiting New Castle had a 24-9 advantage in the fourth quarter. Marcus Hooker led the charge with 19 points. Josh Kline had 12 for the Warriors (7-5, 4-3).

Phil Jurkovec threw down four dunks en route to a 20-point, 14-rebound performanc­e for Class 6A No. 3 Pine-Richland (11-3) in its 8664 non-section win against visiting Steel Valley (7-7).

A 31-point effort from Isaac DeGregorio propelled Hampton (7-8, 3-4) past West Allegheny, 85-71, in Class 5A Section 2. Kyle Constantak­is added 21, while Colby Mignogna had 12 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists. The Indians (6-7, 4-2) were led by Jackson Faulk’s 23 points.

Top girls games

Sarah Nguyen knocked down the last of Penn-Trafford’s four fourth-quarter 3-pointers as time expired to lift the host Warriors (7-7, 3-3) to a 38-37 upset of Class 6A No. 5 Norwin (6-8, 4-2) in Section 2.

No. 2-ranked Winchester Thurston proved to be the top team as it routed No. 1-ranked West Greene, 5838, in Class 1A non-section action. Gia Thorpe netted 19 for the winners.

Star of the night

Zach McDonough poured in 46 points and converted five 3-pointers as top-ranked Vincentian (9-5, 7-0) beat Holy Family (7-5, 3-3), 84-64, in Class 1A Section 1.

Milestones

Amante Britt became the all-time leading scorer at Woodland Hills (13-2, 7-1) thanks to a 22-point effort in an 80-69 Class 6A Section 3 win against visiting Latrobe (10-5, 5-3). The 6-0 senior guard has 1,244 points, putting him ahead of assistant coach Michael Keyes, who scored 1,235 from 19901993.

Serra Catholic girls coach Bill Cleary won his 600th game, steering his team to a 60-13 victory against Mapletown. Cleary is in his 31st season.
