Pitt lands defensive end

-

Pitt landed its first football commitment from a high school prospect since the early signing period when defensive end Kaymar Mimes from Long Branch, N.J., chose the Panthers according to PantherLair.com.

Mimes, 6 feet 5, 235 pounds, was previously pledged to Rutgers.

One reason for the switch was coach Pat Narduzzi, who coached Mimes’ older brother at Michigan State when he was defensive coordinator there.

Penn State shook up its coaching staff when it hired Ja’Juan Seider from Florida as running backs coach; defensive line coach Sean Spencer was named associate head coach; and David Corley, hired from Army to coach the running backs, was moved to wide receivers coach.

Baseball

Miami center fielder Christian Yelich was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers for four prospects, including highly regarded outfielder Lewis Brinson.

• The Brewers continued their outfield revamp by agreeing with Royals center fielder Lorenzo Cain on a five-year contract worth $80 million.

• Jose Reyes and the Mets agreed to a $2 million, one-year contract for the infielder to remain in New York.

• Vladimir Guerrero will become the first player to wear a Los Angeles Angels hat on his Hall of Fame plaque, a surprise to many because he spent more time with the Montreal Expos.

College basketball

Penn State (14-8, 4-5 Big Ten) upset No. 13 Ohio State (18-5, 9-1), 82-79. Tony Carr led the Lions with 28 points and Lamar Stevens added 15 as Penn State handed the Buckeyes their first conference loss.

• Pitt (9-12, 1-7 ACC) fell to No. 5 Notre Dame (19-2, 7-1), 87-53. Yacine Diop led the Pitt women with 10 points.

Golf

In his first PGA Tour event in a year because of a fourth back surgery, Tiger Woods mixed a few mistakes with a few shots that looked familiar with an even-par 72 in the opening round of the Farmers Insurance Open. “It was fun to compete again. It was fun to be out there,” Woods said. But he was seven shots behind Tony Finau, who led with a 65 on the North Course at Torrey Pines.
