Suspect slain by city cops during a foot chase

An exchange of shots occurs in Homewood

Pittsburgh police say a suspect was shot and killed early Sunday after officers were shot at during a foot chase in Homewood.

City public safety spokeswoma­n Alicia George said Zone 5 officers were patrolling the area of Brushton Avenue and Bennett Street around 1:30 a.m. and were “alerted to an actor with a gun.”

After police approached the male suspect, Ms. George said, a “foot pursuit ensued and the actor fired a gun at the officers.”

Police returned fire at the suspect, who she said continued to attempt to flee.

Ms. George said the suspect, whose identity has not been released by officials, died at the hospital.

But the family of Mark Daniels, 39, said Sunday that police told them he was the victim of the shooting.

Anita Williams, Mr. Daniels’ aunt, said the family was notified of his death by a detective at UPMC Presbyteri­an Hospital. Ms. Williams said the family was not permitted to see Mr. Daniels’ body. The door to his hospital room was guarded by “four or five” police officers throughout the day, she said.
