Love, Sex & Science

#ItsComplicated: Upon entering the Valentine’s Day-themed Carnegie Science Center’s 21+ party on Friday night on the North Shore, I was curious as to why everyone was wearing red, yellow or green beads. Green meant you were single, red meant taken and yellow ... well it’s complicated.

I went up to a couple who both had yellow beads on and asked, “What makes this complicated?” The young woman replied, “We are in an open marriage ... technically,” she said, giving her husband the side-eye. I responded, “I like the sound of that,” and quickly realized that my comment could easily be misconstrued. As they laughed and I sheepishly backed away, I vowed to remain an observer for the rest of the evening. Easy to do considering that there were four floors of fun to await the 1,000 partygoers.

“We came last month to their ‘Stranger Things’themed party and had so much fun we decided this was something we were goingto do every month,” said Caitlyn Cabral with her friend Jordan Devine. They were part of a larger crowd gathered around test tubes. The idea was to participate in a large-scale diseasespread simulation. You “swap” the test tubes fluids with other people throughout the night and then could bring them to the fourth floor to see if you “contracted” anything. Gross, yet relevant.

#Swoon: As I took a test tube and decided right then and there I was going to become a monk, I heard the siren song of the Bill Henry Band, which quickly snapped me out of that state with their sultry, sexy sounds. I haven’t heard this band perform before, but if last night was any indication, I have a feeling we will be seeing these talented men a lot more around town. On the third floor, partygoers indulged in liquid nitrogen Love Potion #9 smoothies before putting their noses to the test to identify aphrodisiacs. Not that they needed any help. Between the spiked drinks, the romantic music and the speed dating, no one was going to go home alone. But what I really love about the science center’s events is how they infuse education into entertainment. (And nothing is sexier than being smart!).

Get Your Tickets: The next 21+ party on March 2 is sure to be a blast as you time-travel back to the Middle Ages! http:// www.carnegiesciencecenter.
