Isiah Warfield

Sewickley Academy

- — By Mike White

The past week: Warfield made 18 of 18 free throws and scored 27 points as Sewickley Academy defeated Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, 66-61, Feb. 9 in a WPIAL Class 2A game. OLSH was ranked No. 1 in 2A by the Post-Gazette and Sewickley Academy No. 2. One day later, Duquesne University offered Warfield a scholarship.

Check this out: Warfield is a 6-foot-4, 185-pound guard and one of the best sophomore players in the WPIAL. A few other Division I colleges have shown interest. He is averaging 16 points a game after averaging eight last year while coming off the bench for the WPIAL and PIAA champions. Warfield lives in the Central Valley district and attended Central Valley schools until enrolling in Sewickley Academy in eighth grade. He has good bloodlines. His father, Mike, was a former basketball player and football quarterback at Aliquippa in the 1980s. Isiah’s mother (Victoria) is a Jeter. Isiah’s cousins are former Beaver Falls star athletes Lance, Sheldon and Donovan Jeter.

Was it a big deal to get that first scholarship offer and did you know it was coming? It was a big deal because that was one of my goals. I didn’t know it was coming. One of Duquesne’s assistant coaches was at our OLSH game Friday and I went down to Duquesne and visited Saturday.

Will you give Duquesne a good look? I really like Duquesne. I like coach [Keith] Dambrot and the staff.

Your dad was a pretty good quarterback. You ever play football? When I was little, but I stopped. I liked baseball. Over the years, my love for basketball just grew and I stopped playing baseball. Last year’s Sewickley team won a state championship. Is this team just as good? I feel like this team can be just as good, if not better.

You played in a WPIAL final last year at Petersen Events Center. They used to be at the Palumbo Center. Where would you rather play? I like The Pete. I never got to experience playing at Palumbo, but I think The Pete is just bigger and better.

Best wings around? I like Stevie’s [Dari-Mart] in Aliquippa.
