Cornell grabs win in overtime thriller

Winchester Thurston’s Dusan Krivokapic hit a 3-pointer with 16.7 second left in regulation to tie the score at 3939, forcing overtime, but the Bears weren’t so fortunate in the extra session.

Krivokapic, the thirdleadi­ng scorer in Class 1A, averaging 20.6 points per game through Feb. 11, tried for a second tying 3-point attempt with 8.4 seconds to go in overtime, but it fell short as Cornell hung on for the 44-41 win Friday night in the first round of the WPIAL playoffs.

Winchester Thurston was held to two points in overtime and was led in scoring by Krivokapic with 18, while Cornell was led by Nadhyama Luster with 14 points, followed by Desmond Ross with 12.

Riverside 32, Burrell 27: Riverside, a No. 12 seed, knocked off Burrell, a No. 5 seed, in Class 3A, despite Burrell’s 12-point rally in the fourth quarter. Ty Thellman led Riverside with nine points while Donovan Russell led Burrell with 11.

Aliquippa 62, South Side Beaver 45: The Quips led, 32-23, at halftime, and continued to gain steam, scoring 22 points in the fourth quarter to finish off a Class 3A victory. Marlin Devonshire led Aliquippa with 23 points and Jake McDougal led South Side Beaver with 23.

Washington 46, Brentwood 37: After being held to two points in the third quarter and with the score tied at 24-24, Washington scored 22 points in the fourth quarter to beat Brentwood in a Class 3A first-round game. Washington’s Zahmere Robinson led with 18 points and Jordan Swart was right behind him with 17.

Imani Christian 46, West Greene 39: Imani Christian survived a 16-point rally in the third quarter and Gavin Scott’s 18 points to defeat West Greene in a Class 1A playoff opening-round game. After falling behind, 23-12, at halftime, West Greene cut it to 34-28 before Imani Christian pulled away in the fourth quarter. Deshawn Hubbard led Imani with 21 points, with Marc Peters adding 10 points.

Eden Christian 66, Geibel Catholic 39: Chase Haring scored 26 points as Eden Christian blew past Geibel Catholic in the first round of the Class 1A playoffs. Tanner Gross added 13 points and Dylan Kingan 12. Enzo Fetsko led Geibel with 13 points. Eden Christian had a two-point lead at the end of the first quarter, but a 20-point second quarter led the way to the win. Haring is one of the top scorers in the WPIAL, averaging 20 points per game through Feb. 11.

Propel Andrew Street 57, Holy Family Academy 41: In Propel Andrew Street’s second year in the WPIAL, it won its first WPIAL Class 1A playoff game. With the score tied, 30-30, Propel went on a 15-0 run to end the third quarter. Darrius Davis led Propel with 27 points and Tre Harvey led Holy Family with 13 points.

Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic 67, Ellwood City 53: Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic, the defending Class 3A champion, shot 66 percent from the field in a win against Ellwood City.
