Two of a kind

As far as a scoring duo, the WPIAL hasn’t seen one like Mars’ Robby Carmody and Laurel Highlands’ Bryce Laskey in at least 38 years.

Carmody finished the regular season as the WPIAL’s leading scorer at 33.6 points a game while Laskey was second at 33.3. The Post-Gazette began keeping statistics in 1980. Since then, Carmody and Laskey are the first two to average at least 32 a game in the same season.

Since 1980, the WPIAL has had two players average more than 30 a game only three times:

• 2011 — Three players averaged more than 30: Highlands’ Micah Mason (34.1), Norwin’s Matt Palo (30.1) and Trinity’s Josh Valentic (30.0).

• 1989 — New Brighton’s Chris Pipkin (30.3) and Apollo-Ridge’s Mark Timko (30.1).

• 1984 — Laurel Highlands’ Reuben Davis (35.3) and Carmichaels’ J.L Lechner (31.4).

Overall, only 22 players from the WPIAL and two from the City League since 1980 have averaged 30 or more in the regular season.

Carmody’s and Laskey’s averages are the fifth- and sixth-best in the WPIAL since 1980. And who knew that Laurel Highlands would become the most popular home for big scorers. Three of the top six scorers since 1980 played for Laurel Highlands.

The WPIAL hasn’t seen many scoring duos from the same girls team like Hampton senior guards Laryn Edwards and Ali Collins.

Edwards averaged 21.9 points a game in the regular season and Collins 20.0. Since 1985, two players from the same WPIAL team have averaged 20 points only five times.

Aliquippa’s Carrie Bordas and Mona Gaffney actually did it twice: In 198889, Bordas averaged 26.7 and Gaffney 20.3, while Bordas averaged 26.2 and Gaffney 21.0 in 1989-90.

Monessen’s Gina Naccarato averaged 24.0 and Angie Scirotto 20.2 in 199293. Ellwood City’s Anne Malkowiak averaged 26.7 and Doneen Aloi 20.1 in 1987-88. Central Valley’s
