the 2018 season. He also will count against their 90-man roster until the team reports to training camp in July, at which time Colbert said the Steelers will decide if he should be placed on injured reserve or the physically unable to perform list.

The NFL does not have any category specific to potentially career-ending injuries such as Shazier’s, who was hurt Dec. 4 in Cincinnati.

“Fortunately for Ryan, he’s covered [financially] in that manner, that he will be part of our team officially and also unofficially, because he’s still with us day to day as he rehabs,” Colbert said. “He involves himself with the team and team issues so that he can be a formidable member in 2018.”

Colbert said Shazier has been doing some of his rehab at the team’s UPMC Rooney Sports Complex and has been sitting in on personnel meetings. He will continue to stay involved with team meetings and film sessions once the season begins.

No Bryant trade

Despite what has been widely and erroneously reported, the Steelers have “never ever” made one phone call about trying to trade wide receiver Martavis Bryant, Colbert said.

Colbert said some teams called to inquire about Bryant after reading those reports in the media, but “we have quickly dismissed those.”

Bryant returned from a one-year suspension in 2017 and finished with 50 catches — the same amount he had in 2015 — for 603 yards and three touchdowns. He was not the same deep threat he was two years earlier, catching only one pass longer than 50 yards and two longer than 30.

Colbert was emphatic the Steelers are not looking to trade Bryant, who will be entering the final year of his contract.

“We have never ever made one phone call about Martavis Bryant for a trade,” Colbert said. “Martavis Bryant is a Pittsburgh Steeler, and we want him to continue to be a Pittsburgh Steeler. A lot of kids don’t make it back from a oneyear suspension, but he did. We are not in the trade market for [Bryant].”
