Quaker Valley’s desperate rally nips Hickory, 53-52

Danny Conlan’s father, Shane, was an All-Pro linebacker in the NFL.

Tuesday, the younger Conlan used a late-game blitz to help Quaker Valley keep its season alive.

Conlan scored the final five points, including the winning basket with 29 seconds left, to give Quaker Valley a 53-52 win against Hickory in a PIAA Class 4A second-round game at Slippery Rock University.

Conlan scored 11 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter for Quaker Valley (25-1), which trailed Hickory (21-6), 52-48, before Conlan nailed a 3-pointer with 39 seconds left to cut the deficit to one.

Quaker Valley then forced a turnover, and Conlan made the go-ahead basket with 29 seconds left.

Coletrane Washington added 13 points for the Quakers to give him 1,509 in his career.

Other Class 4A

New Castle 61, South Fayette 41: Marcus Hooker’s 15 points and 17 rebounds helped vault WPIAL champion New Castle (23-4) past South Fayette (17-9) at Aliquippa. Georgie Eggleston scored a team-high 17 points for New Castle, which shot 60 percent (26 of 43) from the field and outscored South Fayette, 229, in the fourth quarter. South Fayette shot 36 percent (17 of 47). Noah Plack led South Fayette with 13 points.

Class 5A

Mars 48, Trinity 40: At Moon, Mars trailed Trinity, 2824, late in the third quarter, but Robby Carmody scored the next eight points to put Mars ahead, and the Planets (23-4) never trailed again. Carmody scored 16 of his team’s final 24 points and finished with a game-high 24 points. Trinity (21-6) led, 19-16, at the half. Robby Carmody was called for his third foul with 5:34 left in the first half and Michael Carmody was whistled for his third foul two minutes later.

Class 1A

Kennedy Catholic 73, Union 37: Oscar Tshiebwe scored 30 points and Maceo Austin chipped in 17 to lead defending champion Kennedy Catholic (20-4) to a convincing win at Slippery Rock University. Nate Meeks paced Union (18-7) with 10 points.

Shanksvill­e- Stonycreek 56, Eden Christian 53: Despite Chase Harings 26 points, Eden Christian (17-7) saw its season end with an overtime loss at Hempfield. Eden Christian led, 45-36, after three quarters, but the Vikings (20-7) rallied to tie the score, 49-49, and force overtime.

Shade 60, Vincentian 56: WPIAL champion Vincentian (19-8) rallied from a ninepoint halftime deficit to take its first lead, 56-55, with just over a minute left, but Shade (24-3) tallied the game’s final five points to claim a win at Armstrong.
