Pittsburgh-area wineries bring home medals

Pittsburgh-area wineries did well in the 2018 Pennsylvan­ia Wine Competitio­n, the results of which were announced earlier this month during the Pennsylvan­ia Winery Associatio­n meeting in Lancaster.

Winning Best White Sweet Wine (and a double gold) was 2017 Trophy Wife made by Black Dog Wine Co. of McDonald .

“It was kind of funny,” says owner and winemaker Mark Rozum. “I was introduced in the morning as a new member and then in the evening won a best of show award!”

The winery, which this spring will open to the public in a new location in Oakdale, also won silver for 2016 Big Beaver Blush and bronze for 2017 Lu’berry.

Carnegie’s Kavic Winery won silver for its 2015 Chardonnay.

Pleasant Hills’ KingView Mead, which is to open a tasting room soon, won gold for 2016 Premium Concord, silver for its non-vintage Happy Apple Pie and bronze for NV (non-vintage) SuB Sweet Mead.

Greene County’s Thistlethw­aite Vineyards won gold for 2016 Vignoles and bronzes for 2016 Old World and 2016 Red Dawg Rouge.

Several Lake Erie-region wineries took awards, including Presque Isle Wine Cellars, which won Best Dry Red Wine with its 2016 Dornfelder.

Best Red Sweet Wine was Cherry Valley Vineyards’ NV Arancia Rossa

Best Sweet Wine in Competitio­n went to Cherry Valley Vineyards’ NV Arancia Rossa.

Best Fruit Wine was Crossing Vineyards & Winery’s NV Peach

Best White Dry Wine was Mount Nittany Vineyards & Winery’s 2016 Chardonnay Reserve.

And Best Dry Wine in Competitio­n was Mount Nittany Vineyards & Winery’s 2016 Chardonnay Reserve.
