Boko Haram returns kidnapped schoolgirls
DAPCHI,Nigeria — Boko HaramIslamic extremists broughtback nearly all of the 110girls they had kidnapped froma boarding school last month,dropping them off in themiddle of the night Wednesdaywith a warning: “Don’tever put your daughtersin school again.”
The girls, apparently unharmed, arrived in a convoy of vehicles about 2 a.m. in the town of Dapchi.
“We were freed because we are Muslim girls and they didn’t want us to suffer,” said Khadija Grema, who added that a Christian classmate remained captive. Six girls remain unaccounted for.
EU proposes tech tax
BRUSSELS— European policymakers on Wednesday unveiled a proposal for a new tax on tech giants such as Facebook and Google that could raise $6.2 billion.
If approved, the proposal would tap into digital titans’ revenues in countries where they have the bulk of their users and customers, imposing a 3 percent tax on income from online advertising, the sale of user data and the connecting of users to each other.
The initiative comes amid a rising trade conflict between Europe and the U.S.
Iraq detains thousands
BAGHDAD— Iraq has detained or imprisoned at least 19,000 people accused of connections to the Islamic State group or other terrorrelated offenses, and sentenced more than 3,000 of them to death, according to an analysis by The Associated Press.
The mass incarceration and speed of guilty verdicts raise concerns over potential miscarriages of justice — and worries that jailed militants are recruiting within the general prison population to build new extremist networks.
