Giants trade Pierre-Paul to Buccaneers

-

The New York Giants traded defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for draft picks Thursday, another step by a team rebuilding after a 3-13 season.

Pierre-Paul is a former first-round draft choice whose career was interrupted by a fireworks accident in 2015 that severely damaged his right hand. He helped the Giants win a Super Bowl in the 2011 season. He signed a four-year, $62 million contract a year ago.

The Giants will get Tampa Bay’s third-round draft pick (69th overall) this season. The teams will swap fourth-round picks, with the Buccaneers moving up to the 102nd pick and the Giants selecting 108th.

Pierre-Paul had 68 tackles, 8½ sacks and two forced fumbles last season. He had 58½ career sacks since he was drafted in 2010 with the 15th pick overall out of South Florida.

Steelers

Defensive lineman Daniel McCullers signed a one-year contract to remain with the Steelers, according to his agent. McCullers, a sixth-round draft pick in 2014, played in 42 games, including two starts, in his first four seasons with the Steelers. McCullers appeared to fall out of favor with former defensive line coach John Mitchell last season. He played in a career-low five games and was inactive for 11 others. New defensive line coach Karl Dunbar might have a different opinion on McCullers when he gets to coach him this spring and summer. The disappointing 2017 season came on the heels of a season in which McCullers dressed for all 16 games in 2016 and recorded a sack and 10 tackles.

Dolphins

Rather than retire, Frank Gore is joining his hometown team. The NFL’s active rushing leader agreed to terms with Miami. Gore, who turns 35 next month, grew up in South Florida and played for the Miami Hurricanes. He rushed for 961 yards for Indianapolis last year, and when the Colts decided against trying to resign him, there was speculation the 2017 season might have been his last. But the Dolphinswant to give the durable Gore a chance to provide depth at running back behind Kenyan Drake. Gore has rushed for 14,026 yards in his NFL career to rank fifth on the all-time list.

Raiders

The Oakland Raiders have re-signed backup quarterback EJ Manuel and signed free agent tackle Breno Giacomini. Manuel is back for a second season and Giacomini is a veteran who can compete for the starting right tackle job. Manuel made one start last season for the Raiders when Derek Carr was hurt. He has made 18 starts over his career with Buffalo and Oakland. Giacomini is entering his 11th season.
