On the mound
On a chilly night at LECOM Park, starter Chad Kuhl gave up two runs, one earned, in 51⁄ innings of work. He struck out five, allowed five hits and walked one.
“I feel really good. Last outing, started to get more of that feel back, and kind of built on that tonight,” Kuhl said.
Kuhl continued to throw in the cage after the game because the team wanted to give Dovydas Neverauskas an opportunity to come on in the middle of an inning. Neverauskas struck out both batters he faced. Michael Feliz struck out the side in the eighth.
Felipe Rivero gave up a two-run homer in one inning. Manager Clint Hurdle said he thought it was Rivero’s best outing this spring.
“Fastball velocity is the best it’s been; slider was the sharpest it’s been,” Hurdle said. “We got a ball we probably need to put away for an out, and a wind-blown home run off the foul pole.”
At Pirate City, Jameson Taillon threw 96 pitches over 52⁄ innings, and Bo Schultz (Tommy John surgery) threw 12 pitches in one inning.
At the plate
Francisco Cervelli hit a two-out, two-run single in the first, scoring Colin Moran and David Freese, and is hitting .379 this spring. Moran went 3 for 5 with one RBI.
In the field
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. reached on a soft grounder after a double clutch by Moran at third base. Guerrero Jr. then scored on the homer given up by Rivero.
