What to wear to cheer on the Pirates
It’s almost time to raise the Jolly Roger for another season of baseball. Do you know what you’re going to wear to show off your Pirates pride for opening day at PNC Park on Monday?
Whether you’re going to the game or cheering on the Bucs from afar, here’s a look at what’s new in Pirates fan gear for him and for her. Go green: It’s become tradition for the Pirates to salute America’s troops during Memorial Day weekend with special jerseys for the occasion. This year, they’re trading in their camouflage ones for sleeker white jerseys with the team’s name, piping and patches done in olive green. Pick up one for yourself at MLBshop.com for $194.99. Pair it with an olive-green baseball cap with camouflage bill for $34.99.
Vintage inspired: Columbusbred brand Homage believes every T-shirt tells a story. Its storefront at 6010 Penn Ave. in East Liberty is splashed with nods to Pittsburgh’s rich sports heritage, including a sprawling black-and-white photograph of fans cheering on the Pirates in the 1960 World Series at Forbes Field. Its MLB line of Tshirts, pullovers and raglan shirts includes a tribute to the Pirates’ 1979 World Series title, its fifth and final win to date. Sport the unisex gold tee with the phrase “WE ARE FAM-A-LEE,” along with the year and a retro Pirates mascot on it, for $32. Check out more Pirates clothing in the store or online at homage.com.
Flash some leather: The bases won’t be the only bags drawing attention at the ballpark. Dooney & Bourke’s collection of Pirates satchels, clutches, crossbody bags, billfolds and more are perfect for carrying just the essentials on game day. They’re done in Pirates logo prints, so there will be no question which team you’re rooting for. Choose from more than a dozen styles starting at $78 at www.dooney.com. More than just baseball: Sure, the game is the main attraction, but the Great Pierogi Race after the fifth inning is a highlight of any visit to PNC Park. Who doesn’t love watching the likes of Jalapeno Hannah, Potato Pete and Sauerkraut Saul go head to head in a 280yard dash? Steel City’s “I’m Here for the Pierogies” unisex tee ($29.99) — done in gray with four adorable racing dumplings across the front -— is a fun twist on the typical Pirates tee. The homegrown brand has a knack for apparel with clever phrases like this, making it a favorite among celebs such as Joe Manganiello, Seth Meyers and the Steelers. See for yourself at its shop at 625 Smithfield St., Downtown, or browse online at shopsteelcity.com.
Dress it up: Add a dose of team spirit to any outfit with a Bucco’s bracelet. The MLB color infusion collection by ALEX AND ANI features a baseball charm with the Pirates “P” logo on a silver adjustable-fit bangle ($38). The made-in-USA jewelry brand has stores at 5505 Walnut St., Shadyside, and in Ross Park Mall. For a full list of other local retailers that carry ALEX AND ANI pieces, visit alexandani.com.
Nailed it: The indie nail polish label Gridlock Lacquer knows a thing or two about Pittsburgh. After all, it’s the creator of the uberpopular chipped-ham pink, parking-chair gold and church-pierogi cream polishes, inspired by these Steel City staples. While it doesn’t have a line of sports-centric polishes (not yet, at least), you can create your own with its Pittsburgh Sports Mix kit ($20 at gridlocklacquer.com). It’s equipped withtwo liquid base polishes and five packets of pigments and glitters in black and gold, plus mixing sticks and other tools to aide in the process. Let’s hope the game won’t be a nail biter!
