Post-Gazette has strong showing in state contests

Here are the winners from the Pennsylvan­ia Associated Press Media Editors contest:

First place honors went to Bill Schackner’s coverage of the struggles of the schools in the state System of Higher Education; “The Land Alcoa Dammed,” an investigat­ive piece by Len Boselovic, Rich Lord, Ms. Strasburg and Mr. Tanner; “Life between two Shell plants,” a business piece by Ms. Litvak, Mr. Rush and Mr. Tanner; Ms. Chambers and Stephen J. Nesbitt piece “A good call: MLB umpire saves suicidal woman”; Elizabeth Bloom’s sports story on Pennsylvan­ia dirt that’s used in most MLB stadiums and “Riding OD Road,” a package of stories written by Rich Lord, with photo and video by Mr. Mellon and Ms. Strasburg, for multimedia storytelli­ng.

Also given first place awards were Mr. Marsula’s illustrati­on “Dangerousl­y Dependent” as well as his full page design “Family, Faith Football”; Ms. Chambers’ feature photo of the young hockey fan; Mr. Diana’s sports photo of the Penguins celebratin­g another Stanley Cup; Ms. Strasburg and Mr. Mellon’s photo story “Riding OD Road,” as well as their video “1601 Brighton Road”; and Ms. Strasburg’s short video “Saying Goodbye on Santron Avenue.”

The Post-Gazette took first place for digital presentati­on.

Second place prizes went to Peter Smith and Nate Guidry’s “Unsettled in America” enterprise reporting; “Riding OD Road” for both special section and for public service; Mr. Batko’s sports story “For better, for worse, forever”; Mr. Hilston and Mr. Yozwick for graphic design; Ms. Chambers for spot news photo; Matt Freed for sports photo and Ms. Strasburg for short video.
