Robert Morris shows interest in Woodland Hills standout

Amante Britt is a scrappy basketball player and some might even call him a dog — as in he’s tough and plays the game hard.

And that has nothing to do with how he got his nickname, “Scrap.”

“That came from my mom,” said Britt, a senior at Woodland Hills. “When I was little, she said I looked like a dog, like ScoobyDoo’s nephew Scrappy-Doo. She would call me that and it stuck.”

Scrap is now busy trying to find a college. He has a handful of Division II colleges to pick from, but a Division I school has recently been showing interest.

A Post-Gazette Fabulous 5 selection, Britt is a 5-foot-11 guard who averaged 20.4 points this season and finished his career as the alltime leading scorer in Woodland Hills history.

Shippensburg, California, Clarion, Pitt-Johnstown, Le Moyne and Millersville have offered scholarships. Britt said he would be happy to go to any of those schools, but said he has long dreamed of playing Division I.

Enter Robert Morris. Britt made a trip to the Moon Township campus Monday and worked out for coach Andy Toole. Robert Morris has at least one scholarship open for this year’s class. At the very least, Britt is happy he got his foot in the door, so to speak, adding that Toole might be coming to watch him play this weekend when Britt’s AAU team, PK Flash, plays in the Pitt Jam Fest.

“[Toole] said he liked my offensive game and my ability to get to the hoop. My basketball IQ, too,” Britt said.

Woodland Hills coach Odell Miller said Britt could definitely be a productive player at the Division I level, adding that the school that lands Britt will get an outstanding student-athlete.

“They wouldn’t have to worry about him being ineligible. He’s a 4.0 student,” Miller said. “They get a kid who’s a gym rat. They get a kid who’s a playmaker and can come in and pass the ball.”

Britt said he hopes to make a decision by early May.

Notre Dame lands star QB

Many people expect big things from Pine-Richland quarterback Phil Jurkovec when he arrives on the Notre Dame campus. Some think he even has a shot to win the starting job this fall. But schools like Notre Dame seem to get a highly-regarded quarterback in just about every class, and the Fighting Irish have already secured one for the class of 2020.

Drew Pyne from New Canaan, Conn., announced Monday on Twitter that he had committed to Notre Dame. He became the first player from the class of 2020 to make a verbal pledge to the school. Pyne is the No. 7 pro-style quarterback in the country according to 247Sports.com’s rankings. Pyne’s list of offers included Alabama, Florida State, Penn State, Oklahoma and Auburn.

Jurkovec was the No. 4 dualthreat quarterback in the class of 2018 according to 247Sports.com.
